My Photo-quilt series combines two long-time interests, photography and quilting. I arrange photographs in a collage using the color theory and patterns of traditional quilts. I have been working in this theme since 1990, when I found myself confronted with hundreds of images of New York’s Çentral Park after living and photographing near the park for a year. After watching an avid quilter select fabric from her “stash” of fabric I started to do the same with my Central Park “stash” of photos and created Spring in Central Park using a pattern called Trip Around the World. I have been working in this mode ever since. Most of my Photo-Quilts are printed on watercolor paper or canvas. Sometimes I weave two photographs together to give the final piece a more three-dimensional quality of fabric; others are embellished with thread. I have made several family or baby quilts printed on fabric in cyanotype, an early photographic process, which I then hand-quilt. |
